The founder of Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow was a merchant Pavel Tretyakov. Together with his brother, Sergei, they collected canvases by Russian and European masters. Trading in linen products brought the brothers a good income, which they invested in collecting and charity.

In 1867, Paul decided to open his collection to the public. To do this, he equipped his home-estate in Lavrushinsky Lane.After the opening of the gallery, Pavel made a lot of efforts to increase the collection. By his order, Ivan Krasmkoy, Ilya Repin, Nikolai Ge and many other artists created their masterpieces for the museum.

Over time, Tretiakov Gallery in Moscow acquired the status of a national museum. Its collections were open for free inspection by all comers. After the death of his brother, Pavel donated a collection of paintings and other works of art as a gift to his native city.

State Tretyakov Gallery today

After the revolution, Tretyakov museum was repeatedly rebuilt and expanded. Modern expositions represent paintings from the time of ancient Russian art to the Soviet period. The most famous works of art are the “Trinity” by Andrei Rublev, “The Unknown” by Ivan Kramskoy, “The Heroes” by Victor Vasnetsov, “The Unequal Marriage” by Vasily Pukirev, “The Apotheosis of War” by Vasily Vereshchagin.
