Russia Saint Petersburg River and Drawbridges

Saint Petersburg is one of the most attractive cities for tourists from all over the world. But not everyone knows what river runs through St. Petersburg. We will talk about the Neva River, which was admired by many poets and artists.

Neva, the Saint Petersburg river is characterized by a wayward character. It originates in Lake Ladoga and flows into the Gulf of Finland. The length of the river in St. Petersburg is 74 kilometers, of which more than 30 are in the city. Scientists claim that the history of the river began about 10 thousand years ago, when it was formed from melting glaciers. Due to its picturesque location and a large number of canals, the city is often compared with Italian Venice.

Saint Petersburg rivers

The Neva became one of the most famous rivers in the world at the time when the new powerful capital of the Russian state was built on it. This happened in 1703 by order of Peter I, who dreamed of a new beautiful city.

Along with the making canals, the purification and deepening of rivers, the construction of numerous embankments was carried out. The first buildings of the new city were the Peter and Paul Fortress and Nevsky Prospect.

The river in Saint Petersburg is called the most unstable in the world. Throughout its length, it constantly changes its width and depth. Because of these fluctuations, floods often occur on the river, one of which was described by Pushkin in the poem The Bronze Horseman.

Bridges across the Neva

Drawbridges on the river in Russia in St. Petersburg belong to the most famous sights of the city. Bridges are opened at night for free passage of ships. There are 13 drawbridges in the city; this process always attracts tourists.

On the banks of the Neva there are beautiful embankments, a river station, as well as a marina, from where sightseeing and walking routes start. River walks along the Neva are especially popular during the white nights, when the city looks romantic and mysterious.

The banks of the Neva are the places of location of the Admiralty building, the Alexander Nevsky Lavra, the Summer Garden, the Hermitage, the Spit of Vasilyevsky Island, the Smolny Monastery, the Field of Mars and other places of interest.

There is a lot of fish in the Neva. Here you can catch smelt, bream, catfish, pike. A favorite place for lovers of fishing is Kutuzov Embankment.
