The palace owes its name to Archangel Michael. The place for the construction of the Russian castle in St. Petersburg was chosen at the confluence of the Moika with the Fontanka.
Paul I really wanted to enter the palace as quickly as possible and was in a hurry to build it. The work on its construction did not stop even at night and was carried out with torches. Outwardly, the palace resembled a castle from fairy tales, embodying Paul’s dream to make it a meeting place for the Knights of Malta. The construction took four years. As a result, the beautiful palace of St. Petersburg was opened on November 8, 1800.
However, the emperor did not enjoy life in St. Petersburg Castle for a long time. A few months later he was killed in his own chambers. The Romanov family left the palace, and over the years it has become the location of various organizations.Today, the palace was restored, and its interiors are the same as they were during the time of Emperor Paul I.
