One of the oldest ballet schools in the world was founded on May 4, 1738 by the decree of Empress Anna Ivanovna.
Vaganova Academy was famous not only for its famous ballet masters, such as Jules Perrault, Marius Petipa, Enrico cecetti, but also for its talented graduates.
Among the famous graduates of the Academy is Anna Pavlova, who shone in Paris at Diaghilev’s Russian seasons. She introduced the whole world to Russian ballet. Known to all is Galina Ulanova, Fairy Matilda Kshesinskaya, Vaclav Nijinsky, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Ulyana Lopatkina.
In September 1957 in the Leningrad choreographic school named after Vaganova (the original name of the Academy) was opened a Museum.
The exposition of which traces the history of the Russian ballet school. The first exhibits were photos of graduates of the Theater school, preserved from pre-revolutionary times. Funds include a handwritten Department with memoirs, diaries, personal autographs and constantly growing new rarities.

Currently, the Academy provides training in classical dance for children from 10 years on the program of secondary vocational education.
